The Government views safe and dependable transport as essential to the UK society and the economy. It is working to make rail, road, air and water transport more efficient and effective, keep them safe and secure, and reduce greenhouse gas and other emissions.

Transport is a major source of greenhouse gases. Around a quarter of domestic carbon dioxide (CO₂) and other greenhouse gas emissions in the UK come from transport. Transport is also a source of emissions which make air quality worse.

Reducing greenhouse gases from transport will help the Government’s long term goal of reducing the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% compared to 1990 levels by 2050.

Examples of current transportation initiatives at Government level include: higher levels of to Train Operating Company investment, promotion of High Speed 2, construction of Crossrail and promotion of Crossrail 2, Upgrading rail tracks and stations (High Level Output Specification) and electrification of important railway routes.
