In a bid to improve air quality across the UK, letters have been sent from the Parliamentary Under-Secretary (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) to some City Councils outlining concerns at the progress of plans to improve air quality in certain areas.
Ministerial Directions were sent previously to councils requesting that by 15th September 2018, Full Business Cases detailing the local plans to ensure conformance with statutory nitrogen dioxide limits within the shortest time possible were submitted. Where councils have suggested that this deadline will not be met, Defra have issued letters of concern highlighting the legal implications of missing such a deadline and the serious consequences associated with this lack of action. The Parliamentary Under-Secretary has advised that she wishes to be kept closely informed of the progress of such matters.
