Southdowns’ Director, Rick Methold was one of the presenters for Crossrail’s presentation entitled ‘Vibration Control for Listed Buildings’ at the Institute of Acoustics meeting on Acoustics from Large Infrastructure Projects on 10th May 2016 at the Royal Society in London. The presentation centred around the work that the main contractor (Costain Skanska JV) had undertaken to protect heritage assets from vibration induced damage at Paddington Station whilst constructing the new below ground station alongside the existing Grade I Listed Buildings. Southdowns were the appointed Noise and Vibration Specialists for the main contractor and the work included: deployment and management of noise and vibration monitoring systems; undertaking early vibration risk assessments; conducting comprehensive vibration surveys during controlled trials of high risk activities; and advising on the appropriate criteria to be applied to manage the risk of cosmetic damage to the Listed building structures. The presentation to the IOA follows the publication of a paper on the subject as part of Crossrail’s Learning Legacy initiative. The full paper can be viewed at the following web-site.
