Kier London has signed a GBP 15m enabling works contract for the development of the Queensland Road area with long-term partnering client Newlon Housing Trust and ATL, the commercial arm of Arsenal FC. The contract comprises demolition of the existing buildings, realignment of the existing Queensland Road and lowering the site levels, together with the first stage of reconstruction for a new indoor five-a-side football facility for the club.
Southdowns was appointed to provide noise, vibration and air quality (dust) monitoring and support services to the project. The monitoring package comprises two unattended noise monitors, two unattended vibration monitors and an unattended dust monitor. The noise and air quality data is remotely accessible using GPRS technology, whilst vibration data is emailed on a daily basis. Combined with instant email / text alarms when threshold limits are exceeded, Kier is able to actively manage noise, vibration and dust emissions from site with quick response times. Southdowns provides weekly reports of the monitoring results which are submitted to Kier London.
The ability of the equipment to send out alarms on exceedance of pre-defined thresholds has allowed the contractor to refine and amend its demolition and construction methods and activities to minimise disturbance to adjacent households and other sensitive receptors.
